College of Science, University of Al-Mustansiriyah discussed a master dissertation on producing of maps of environmental sensitivity to desertification in the southern Marshes of Iraq by the postgraduate student, Mr. Ahmed Fadhil Hani.
The dissertation aimed at assessing and identifying fields sensitive to desertification in the marshes of southern Iraq, using the Mediterranean Land Use Model (MEDALUS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The dissertation reviewed on remote sensing (RS) data, satellite images, digital soil maps, rainfall and temperature data for the region and an analysis of it using geographic information systems (GIS).
The dissertation demonstrated that more than (70%) have a high probability of desertification due to poor vegetation cover, poor soil, excessive exploitation of natural resources and human activities, as well as the lack of rainfall and high temperatures.
