The faculty members in the College of Engineering, University of Al-Mustansiriyah, Mr. Ali Dhafir Abid and Mrs. Areej Mohi Abdul Wahhab conducted a study on the possibility of implementing blue energy to produce electricity in Iraq. The study, which was published in the Urban Water Journal in Clarivate and Scopus, reviewed the feasibility of implementing blue energy in the University of Basra at the crossroads of the six rivers in the Shatt Al-Arab, as well as the mentioned energy is one of the modern types of sustainable energies and it is also an important renewable source to generate electricity. The study aimed at conducting a technical application of osmosis power in the City of Basra at Shatt Al-Arab and testing it implementing a simulation model to review the flow characteristics of each river and the electrical energy that can be generated in estuaries. The study demonstrated that the area of one cubic meter in the source of each of the six rivers of Basra City has the ability to produce osmotic power to operate the turbines and produce electrical energy between (11.92 - 13.08 kWh / m3), as well as the concentration of salinity in these rivers between (8 to 64 mm bananas / cm), which can be contributed in generating osmosis pressure that is also able to operate the turbines in some parts of the river. The study concluded that the generating of blue energy via osmosis power is considered as one of the applicable technologies in the City of Basra due to the availability of all conditions to operate clean power generation and production plants appropriate to the environment, as it can be an alternative to high-cost energy produced by fuel-fired stations.
