College of Science, University of Basrah discussed
a Ph.D. thesis on the molecular investigation of the CRISPR system and some
antibiotic resistance genes in Escherichia coli bacteria isolated from patients
with urinary tract infection by the postgraduate student, Mr. Ahmed Jassim
Muhammad.
The thesis aimed at identifying the ability
of bacteria to produce Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBLs) and
Carbapenemase enzymes and to determine the distribution of the CRISPR system in
bacterial isolates.
The thesis demonstrated that the (CRISPR)
system is present in 87% of the Archaea genome and in 50% of the bacterial
genome and has a major role in the defense mechanism as a natural adaptive
immunity in E. coli bacteria.
