College of Agriculture, University of Basrah discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the effect of two types of compost and spraying with bay leaf extract and barley culture on the growth and yield of two varieties of potato plantsby the postgraduate student, Mr. Murtadha Sarhan Mahlahal.
The thesis aimed at producing potatoes under the organic farming system and choosing the best variety of potato plants suitable for growth in the conditions of Basrah Governorate.
The thesis demonstrated that the Borin variety was significantly superior in all vegetative and productive growth characteristics, except for field emergence, in which the Rivera variety was superior, while the Borin variety was superior in the percentage of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus in the leaves, the plant's chlorophyll content and the percentage of starch in the tubers.
