A joint research team in the College of Science, University of Al-Mustansiriyah obtained a patent on preparing combined material of chitosan and the Australian tea tree oil extract (Melaleuca alternifolia) to be used in extending the life of the locally produced citrus reticulate after the harvest. The patent, in which granted by the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control Unit of the Ministry of Planning, reviewed that the new material will be used as a substitute for traditional fungicides in sustaining the lifetime of the Citrus reticulate and protecting it from damage after harvest in order to reduce the economic losses to farmers. The patent highlighted that the new material is eco- friendly that decomposes to its main components, with its high efficiency in preserving citrus fruits from damage and decaying after harvest.
