College of Medicine, University of Al-Nahrain discussed a Ph.D. thesis on detecting of type I interferon antibodies and genetic polymorphisms of interferon regulatory factors in a sample of coronavirus patients by the postgraduate student, Mrs. Marwa Ali Ibrahim.
The thesis aimed at diagnosing the level of interferon Alpha and interferon Gamma in the serum of patients with Covid-19 and compare it to the control group and verify the presence of antibodies to interferon Alpha and Gamma in the serum of infected people and compare it to the control group, as well as detecting the presence of IRF3 & OAS1 gene polymorphisms in Infected patients.
The thesis demonstrated that the immunological markers showed a decrease in the level of interferon Alpha and Gamma in Covid-19 patients in the severe group compared to the mild/Moderate and control group, with an increase in the level of antibodies to interferon Alpha and Gamma in the serum of the severe group compared to the mild/Moderate and control group.
The thesis recommended the importance of investigating the presence of antibodies to interferon Alpha and Gamma in the serum of patients to avoid giving interferon medication to patients.
