Basrah University Obtains Patent

A research team in the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah obtained a patent on the anti-viral activity of Newcastle disease as a new component of Sulfamethoxazole drug. The patent, in which granted by the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control Unit of the Ministry of Planning, aimed at the modifying of Sulfamethoxazole drug to produce a new component that was tested as an anti-virus against Newcastle disease which affects poultry and that causes significant economic losses of up to 100%. The patent reviewed the laboratory conducted results on the virus after injecting chicken eggs showed the effectiveness of the component prepared to eliminate this type of virus while there is no effective drug against the disease.
