Technical College of Engineering/Baghdad, Middle Technical University discussed a master dissertation on microstructure and mechanical properties of white metal alloys used in turbines by the postgraduate student Mazen Ahmed Mahmoud.

The dissertation aimed at improving the mechanical properties of tin-based alloys, such as hardness and bond strength, by changing their microscopic structure by preparing new alloys containing different percentages of zinc (0, 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5%), where these alloys are commonly used as linings for turbine bearings.

The dissertation highlighted evaluating the structure and properties of these alloys by conducting microscopic tests and mechanical tests, such as destructive bond strength and microhardness testing to determine the best alloy.

The dissertation reviewed that the alloy containing 1.5% zinc has the best mechanical properties, as the bond strength between the alloy and the bearing substrate improved by 60% compared to the base alloy, as well as the hardness improved by 32%.
