The College of Science, Misan University discussed a master dissertation on exfoliative cytological analysis of mucosal membranes in patients with metabolic diseases by the postgraduate student, Ms. Sidiqa Hassan Jawi.

The dissertation aimed at utilizing exfoliative cytology to study oral changes at the cellular and molecular levels and their relationship to metabolic diseases and their progression, as well as cell counts were assessed in cheek smears, and changes in nuclear morphology and cytomorphic changes were studied, along with their correlation with changes in insulin levels, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, body mass index, tissue transglutaminase antibodies and insulin resistance.

The dissertation reviewed a significant decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in cell count when comparing the different groups to the control group, a change in cell count with age was also observed, in addition to a correlation between cell count and biochemical indicators.
