College of Science, Mustansiriyah University discussed a Ph.D.
thesis on the sensitivity of some skin fungi against several macroalgae
extracts. by the postgraduate student, Ms. Zaman Abd Al-Hussein Ali.
The thesis aimed at researching the pathogenic causes of fungi and
clarify their relation with the environment and society via identifying and
diagnosing some skin fungi, as well as isolating and diagnosing several large
algae from the city’s environment, evaluating their antifungal activity, and reviewing
methods of preventing fungi, methods of treating them and reducing their spread.
The thesis reviewed identifying and diagnosing dermatophytes in
Al-Musayyib General Hospital, isolating and diagnosing a number of macroalgae,
studying their physical and chemical properties and toxicity, and investigating
the content of their extract of biologically active compounds, relying on
traditional and mass (GC) methods.
The thesis highlighted the emergence of a new type of fungus
(Trichophyton Indotineae), which is considered one of the most common types of
fungi that cause dermatophytosis and the results also indicated that the
antifungal (Clotrimazole) outperformed the rest of the antibiotics by recording
the highest areas of inhibition against the isolates and that the chloroform
extract from the mixture of Kara and Spirogyra It was at the forefront of the
most effective extracts that inhibited skin fungi.
The thesis concluded that alcoholic extracts of algae isolated and
identified from the environment of the city of Babylon contain specific
effective compounds that may prevent the growth of skin fungi in solid media,
with a direct and clear relation between the concentration of the extract and
its inhibitory effect.
