During a visit of the Director General of the Arab Organization for Atomic Energy, Dr. Salem Hamdi and the accompanying delegation to Baghdad in light of the announcement that Basrah Governorate is free of radioactive contamination, His Excellency, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Nabeel Kadim Abid Al-Sahib reviewed that the specialized Iraqi competencies in academic institutions removed and treated the radioactive pollution in Basrah Governorate. Dr. Abid Al-Sahib highlighted that the comprehensive scientific survey and laboratory examination by national experts in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Science and Technology in cooperation with the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission marked a number of polluted areas, which needs a diligent work in the marked areas to be treated from the wastes and their effect dating back to the era of the wars of the last century. His Excellency added that the specialized institutions in the Ministry especially the Radioactive Waste Directorate and through integration with the Advisory Board and the Ministry of Health and Environment which provided full support and backing to get rid of the effects of waste and planned work to end the pollution file. Dr. Abid Al-Sahib appreciated the efforts of the Arab Atomic Energy Organization for attending the activities of declaring Basrah free of radioactive contamination. His Excellency stressed on that Iraq is fully committed to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the employment of all scientific, technical and human capabilities in this field to achieve these goals. Dr. Abid Al-Sahib calling on documenting the Iraqi experience, which represents a story Mission success in the field of human and environmental protection. For his part, Dr. Hamdi appreciated the national efforts of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the experts of the Organization’s scientific institutions in treatment and implementation that lead to the declaration of Basrah free of pollution.
