Kirkuk University: On Desertification & Lands Degradation

College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Kirkuk organized a workshop on the phenomenon of desertification and land degradation in Iraq.

The workshop, in which a number of researchers and specialists participated, aimed at reviewing factors behind desertification in Iraq and its manifestations, as well as reviewing its impact and methods of reducing desertification.

The workshop reviewed the factors contributing in the phenomenon of desertification such as climatic changes, high temperature, low rainfall or scarcity, which leads to accelerate evaporation, accumulation of salts in the cultivated land and floods sweeping the soil and uprooting crops, in which threatens soil fertility.

The workshop recommended the need to preserve natural grassland, developing natural vegetation cover, avoid overgrazing and surrounding lands prone fields and lands to erosion of trees and shrubs.
