College of Science, University of Thi-Qar discussed a master dissertation on evaluating of contamination of some agricultural soils with heavy metals through the use of the geographic pollution index in the governorate by the postgraduate student, Mrs. Amal Ahmed Salem.
The dissertation highlighted estimating of heavy elements such as cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, and iron in the agricultural soils of five areas in Thi-Qar Governorate, through the use of a flame atomic absorption device to estimate these elements after a soil digestion process using aqua regia.
The dissertation used pollution indicators represented by geographical pollution, pollution factor, degree of pollution, potential environmental risk index, and pollution load index for evaluation in order to determine the sources of soil pollution in Thi-Qar Governorate, whether they are natural or human sources.
The dissertation concluded that the values of the geographical accumulation factor (Igeo) of the soil that was studied are not contaminated with the elements studied, except for the element cadmium, as the values indicated its contamination to some extent, and that the values of the environmental risk factor Er and the potential environmental risk index RI showed that the soil is not contaminated with the elements, which was studied, except for the Er values for the element cadmium, as the values indicated that it was moderately polluted.
