The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced that Ninety-two Iraqi universities and colleges have secured a place in the global UI GreenMetric ranking for 2026, up from 87 Iraqi educational institutions in the previous year's edition, according to the published data on the ranking's official website.

Higher Education reviewed that the current edition saw the participation of approximately 2,016 university institutions from 110 countries worldwide. University of Babylon led the Iraqi institutions, ranking 101st globally, followed by the universities of Anbar, Al-Mustaqbal, Karbala, Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical, Baghdad, Al-Kafeel, and Warith Al-Anbiya, this reflects the growing presence of Iraqi higher education institutions in the field of campus sustainability.

The Ministry highlighted that the UI GreenMetric ranking (https://uigreenmetric.com/.../unive.../overall-rankings-2026) relies on six key criteria to measure university sustainability performance: campus setting and infrastructure (15%), energy and climate change (21%), waste management (18%), water usage (10%), transportation and mobility within the campus (18%), and academic education and research programs (18%).
