The College of Science, Mustansiriyah University discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the purification and characterization of beta-glucan extracted from certain types of lactic acid bacteria, studying its biological effects and potential applications in medicine and biology by the postgraduate student, Ms. Intisar Hussein Abdul Hameed.
The thesis aimed to purify and characterize beta-glucan produced by
lactic acid bacteria and explore its biological potential, particularly in
treating wound infections and enhancing certain vital bodily functions.
The thesis included the isolation and identification of lactic acid
bacteria from various sources, the production, extraction, purification, and
characterization of beta-glucan using advanced laboratory techniques, and the
evaluation of several of the compound's biological activities.
The thesis demonstrated that beta-glucan possesses significant efficacy
in inhibiting bacteria that cause wound infections, as well as its ability to
reduce biofilm formation.
