College of Science, Kirkuk University discussed a master dissertation on the combined effect of gum infections and type 2 diabetes on joint pain by the postgraduate student, Mr. Alaa Ali Hussein.
The dissertation reviewed isolating and diagnosing of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and fungi from periodontal and gum infections for type 2 diabetes patients, joint pain and the extent of resistance of bacterial and fungal isolates to antibiotics.
The dissertation aimed at conducting a sensitivity test and investigating the presence of efflux pumps using PCR technology, and studying some virulence factors such as the production of the enzymes lecithinase, lipase, hemolysin, capsule, and biofilm formation.
The dissertation demonstrated an increase in cases of periodontitis in people with type 2 diabetes and arthritis.
