College of Medicine, University of Al-Mustansiriyah discussed a Ph.D. thesis on the potential therapeutic role of metformin in the treatment of osteoarthritis by the postgraduate student, Mr. Ali Kazem Jalaab. The thesis demonstrated the preventive and therapeutic effect of metformin when used alone or in combination with a selective COX-II inhibitor in the treatment of osteoarthritis caused via using of monosodium iodoacetate in laboratory experiments. The thesis reviewed that metformin taken orally can reduce the severity of osteoporosis due to its anti-inflammatory effect by decreasing inflammatory biomarkers.
