Higher Education: On Desertification & Drought

Directorate of Environment and Water, merged Ministry of Science and Technology held a symposium entitled (Desertification and Drought in Iraq is a Phenomenon or a Problem: Causes and Solutions) reviewed the causes of desertification, land degradation, drought, the resulting environmental and health effects was delivered by Dr. Maitham Abdullah Sultan, as well as delivering two lecture, the first was entitled (Desertification Phenomenon: Occurrence and Recurrence of Dust Storms in Iraq: Green Solutions). The symposium demonstrated the solutions and treatments to combat desertification and drought and the projects to be implemented to reduce the occurrence of environmental damage. The symposium delivered the second lecture entitled (The La Niña phenomenon and its climatic effects on weather events in Iraq) on the natural phenomena of El Niño and La Niña, the reasons for their emergence and their impact on the global climate and the effect of the La Niña phenomenon on the climate of Iraq, which was characterized by frequent droughts, low rainfall and high temperatures by Dr. Basem Muhammad Hashem from the Environmental Research Center / Directorate of Environment and Water.
