The researcher in the Directorate of Materials Research, merged Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Radhi Mohsin Jiyad designed a security monitoring system for communications in fiber optic via sending a low-power light signal. Dr. Jiyad said that the system is working with high detection and sensitivity, as a fraction of the optical wavelengths, an attenuation measuring device that works on reflected excitation and an optical spectrum analyzer can be used to detect the signal, as well as monitoring the oil and gas pipeline to protect from leakage or smuggle and monitor the surfaces of dams from any damage via adding fiber optic sensors. Dr. Jiyad added that the technology is contributing in monitoring and alarming system against penetration and limiting access to the optical cable, especially when some companies develop methods of eavesdropping and stealing data over the fiber optic network at the nodes and reloading units (optical repeaters), which causes a great loss of signal traffic in those areas.
