During a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador to Baghdad, Mr. Ulric Shannon, His Excellency, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Nabeel Kadim Abid Al-Sahib reviewed the scientific and academic cooperation between the two countries. Dr. Abid Al-Sahib highlighted the Ministry’s keenness on developing the bilateral relations at the scientific and academic levels, upgrading of the level of cooperation that fulfills the requirements of cultural and knowledge exchange, calling on formulating of rules and programs that outline coordination aspects and define the premises and contexts responsible for scholarships, jointing international conferences, training and benefiting from Canadian academic expertise in modern specializations in the fields of medicine, industry, agriculture and engineering and strengthening the joint work in the accreditation and ranking of the universities. His Excellency demonstrated that the priorities approved by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research are going towards scientific twinning programs between Iraqi universities and their counterparts who enjoy global competition in the rankings. Dr. Abid Al-Sahib stressed on that the scientific partnership can be achieved into the Iraqi Canadian University project that takes into the considerations the requirements of the Iraqi needs at the scientific, research, investment and economic levels on the one hand and provides a cooperation environment that advances bilateral relations between Iraq and Canada on the other hand. His Excellency also reviewed the Ministry’s orientation to a project related to the studying of resumption of student scholarships according to programs that focus on specific specialties that serve the needs of the State’s institutions in light of the rapid scientific development. For his part, Mr. Shannon expressed his appreciation for the Iraqi Higher Education’s keenness on cooperating. Mr. Shannon said that the Canadian’s readiness on developing relations, focusing on the scientific and academic aspect, opening on Iraqi university institutions, activating the memorandum of understanding between the two countries, developing its contents and strengthen partnership.
