The researcher in the Directorate of Materials Research, merged Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Muhanad Musa designed an optical system for the detecting carbon dioxide. Dr. Musa reviewed that the system works is working via using optical transmission and reception system within infrared wavelengths by detecting proportion of gas due to the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with gas molecules as well as each gas has its own spectral absorption characteristics. Dr. Musa also reviewed that the system is characterized by high accuracy of analysis where it can be used in detecting the proportion of gas in the oil industry, where the proportion of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and indoor areas is an indicator of environmental pollution.
